A coil of galvanised steel wire wound into a flat open ring and tied off at one point so it does not spring apart in the hand. The finish is a bright silver zinc coating that resists rust, and the wire is soft enough to bend into shape by hand yet firm enough to hold that shape once formed. The coil is roughly the span of an open hand, which makes it easy to hold while paying out a length. Gauges run from a fine 0.3 mm up to a stiffer 1.6 mm.
